Exiles
A feature length spoken word film based on the book by Victoria McNulty and winner of the 2022 Annual John Byrne Award.
Any modern city will have hundreds of histories intertwined at any given time. These histories are dominated by who has the voice to speak. Glasgow during the Iraq War. A young couple fighting for their lives in a city riven by poverty, gentrification, boredom and sin. Through nostalgic storytelling and historical observations, Exiles dissects ways in which history shapes our past and predetermines our future, with often devastating consequences. Victoria McNulty’s evocative performance is intertwined with specially filmed segments that transform this story.

Praise for Exiles
‘Exiles flies on volleys of hip-hop word-painting, gyrates over the rooftops of the city and identifies the Everyman in the crowd.’

The Morning Star
‘Each element interplays with the other, the photography, the poetry, the music, complementing each other to produce a film that is beautiful to watch, uncompromising in its message and genuinely breath-taking to listen to.’
